How to Apply a Roof Coating

Surface preparation is key to the longevity of a roof coating. Follow our tips to get the best possible result.

Substrate: Concrete tiles

Note: Not suitable for weathered asbestos slates and fibre cement slates.

Surface Preparation:

Proper surface preparation is crucial to maximum finish performance. The durability of this product can be impaired by an unsound or poorly prepared surface. Surfaces must be clean, dry and sound before painting.

• Treat any fungal growths with Colourtrend Fungicidal Wash as per instructions on packaging.
• Power wash to remove all dirt, grime and loose material. Pressures of 1500-2000psi, preferably with hot water, (steam cleaning), have proven particularly effective. Power washing should be carried out from top to bottom of roof, cleaning each tile with a downward motion, taking care not to disturb the slates which can lead to subsequent leaking of the roof.

Application of Primer:

Application of this coating system should take place in dry weather. DO NOT apply when there is a risk of rain, frost, fog or if the temperature will fall below 10°C during application, or within 6 hours of finishing painting or in high Humidity conditions, (>80%). DO NOT apply in direct sunshine or if surface temperature is warm to touch.

• Can be applied with brush, roller or spray.
• Apply one coat of Colourtrend Stabilising Primer.
• Allow 1-2 hours to dry.

Application of Top Coat:

Colourtrend Roof Coat – available in Black, Turf Brown or Slate Grey.

• Can be applied with brush, roller or spray.

(When brushing, always complete one tile or slate before proceeding to the next one. For all spray applications, use suitable respiratory equipment).

• Apply one coat of Colourtend Roof Coat.
• Recoat in 4-6 hours.
• Apply second coat of Colourtrend Roof Coat.
