Choose Your Paint Supplies 

Paint: Tester pots are perfect for small projects like this. They provide just the right amount of paint without wasting materials. 

Sketching Tools:Pencils, markers, pens or chalk would be the best tools for sketching out your design before you paint. 

Paintbrushes: Use a variety of paintbrushes, including fine-tipped ones for details and larger ones for covering more surface area. 

Prepare Your Door Mat 

Clean the Surface: If you are upcycling an old rug, make sure to brush off al dirt and debris from the surface. Shake the rug outdoors to remove all dust.

Set up your area: Give yourself lots of space and lay down a plastic sheet so as not to drip paint elsewhere. Set up all tools and pots and plan your desired design. 

 Plan Your Design 

Sketch First: Lightly sketch your design on the rug with a pencil, chalk or marker before painting. This helps in visualizing the final look and makes it easier to correct mistakes. 

 Paint Techniques 

Base Coat: If you are applying more than one colour in a space work in stages, apply a base coat of paint in a solid colour. This provides a good foundation and can help make your design colours stand out more. 

Layering Colours: Use multiple layers of paint to achieve depth and richness in your design. Let each layer dry before applying the next. 

Heavy Drenching:Load a larger brush with paint and apply to the area. Use this technique to help fill large spaces, as the bristles of the rug will soak a lot of the paint. Use this technique with caution around the edges of the designs as you don't want the area to overfill! 

Leave your finished rug 24 hours to dry before leaving it outside your front door, to increase the longevity of your design we recommend placing the rug in a covered area, for example in a porch.
