How to choose the most suitable primer for your project - Colourtrend Paints

Much like building a house, it is important that time and care is taken when preparing the foundations of your painting project. Priming is recommended for a variety of projects, some of which are outlined below. It is generally good practice to prime any bare surface in advance of painting.

The Colourtrend Prime collection offers 4 different primers, each with a unique function that ensures a good base for the application of your topcoat.  The following guide discusses which primer is appropriate for which use and will help you find the most suitable primer for your project.

Prime 1: Acrylic

Prime 1 is available to purchase in 750ml, 2.5L and 5L sizes. You can view this product on our website here.
  • Blocks difficult stains such as water, smoke, tannins and nicotine.
  • Multi-surface and multi-purpose. Suitable for use on MDF, PVC, fascias, soffits, plastics, glass and ceramic tiles.
  • An excellent primer for exterior wood, particularly hardwoods as Prime1 has outstanding knot and tannin blocking properties.
  • Easy to use; low odour, fast-drying, clean up with water.

    Hardwoods

    Knots and Tannin Bleed

    New Wood

    Smoke and Fire Damage

    Plywood

    Odour Blocking

    Concrete Walls (i)

    Tea/ Coffee, Lipstick/Crayons and Graffiti Marking

    Caulk

    Nicotine/ Tobacco Stains

    PVC including: PVC doors, windows, frames, fascias, soffits.

    Mildew and Mould Stains (ii)

    Prime 2: Epoxy

    Prime 2 is available to purchase in 750ml, 2.5L and 5L sizes. You can view this product on our website here.

    • Formulated to give superior adhesion to multiple surfaces giving it excellent versatility, including ferrous metals.
    • Quick turnaround time. Ideal where the least amount of disturbance is of critical importance.
    • Water-based: Non-flammable, low odour, easy to use, clean up with water.

    This primer is highly recommended for:

    MDF/ Hardboard

    Caulk

    Plywood

    Ceramic Tiles

    Aluminium/ Stainless Steel

    Formica/ Veneer

    Melamine

    Galvanised: Etched and weathered

    Laminates

    Flash Rusting

    Gloss Paint/ Glass

    Gloss Varnishes & Clear Finishes

     

    Prime 3: Oil

    Prime 3 is available to purchase in 750ml, 2.5L and 5L sizes. 

    • Multi- surface and multi-use: Perfect for front doors, even over varnish and woodstain.
    • Excellent on all metals including: ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as galvanised, mild steel, aluminium, etc.
    • Quick-drying and can be used at low temperatures.
    • Clean up with white spirits.

    This primer is highly recommended for:

    Hardwoods

    Formica/ Veneer

    New wood

    Galvanised: Etched and Weathered

    Plywood

    PVC including; PVC doors, window frames, fascias and soffits

    Aluminium* / Stainless Steel

    Tannin Bleed

    Melamine

    Prime 4: PSU

    Prime 4 is available to purchase in 750ml, 2.5L and 5L sizes. You can view this product on our website here.

    • Superior protection against blistering, flaking and peeling.
    • Primes and seals absorbent surfaces such as bare plaster and masonry.
    • A breathable coating: Allows the surface to breathe after the application of the primer.

    This primer is highly recommended for:

    Plasterboard

    Concrete Walls (i)

    Plaster (i)

    Caulk

    Lime Plaster *pH must be <11

    Wallpaper (iii)

    Brick

    Stucco Walls

     

    Note:

    i) New plaster and cement should be fully cured prior to application.

    ii) Surface to be painted should be prepared with Colourtrend Fungicidal Wash prior to application.

    iii) Test the area first.
